Prologue
Open Heart and Mind
Young and old keep an open heart
And an open mind as you read this story
It is important that you do, line by line
You won’t find any of the blood and glory.
It is true as I can tell it, trust, in me
If you read me, you know, truth, is all
To me. Think ~ it is stranger than fiction
I leave it all to you, it is your call.
Sit back and read, store it in your mind.
Your heart will tell you, when the time
Comes, it is story hour ~ is it fiction?
You have lived it, relive it from your mind.
I have roamed the woods, found my truth
And believe in all that I see, there is more;
A silent voice tells me, look about you now
I do, I know. Why did I not see it all before?
HE is the truth.
Chapter 1
The Nether Folk, “As I Walk My Wooded Land “
The day is o’er, the sun
fades in the western sky
Evening shadows filter in
keep out the light left behind
A narrow shaft, here and there
lights the way of the lonely ones
That live by neither night or day
and choose to stay their way alone
The Nether Clan’s a mystery
Not ever seen and seldom heard
Then– only by their eerie squeak
A Language known to them alone
There’s evidence of their intellect
in the way they shun the throng
and how their lives are secrets kept
from those who-might do them wrong
As for me I say, let them be — don’t harm
There’s a certain comfort as I pass by
Where I see — they’ve been and stayed
Of this mysterious clan, I have no fear
There’s no danger, hidden here
Leave them be, to what is theirs
Be thankful for the care they take
of the paths of mystery we walk
Yea– we traverse them day by day
Unknowing of all the secrets kept
which protect us from all harm
I am thankful for the Nether Clan.
As you walk this hallowed earth
be careful where you step
each stride you make involves another
don’t let your way, do harm or hurt.
Today I walked my woodland
Thru a quiet place I’d found
It was just a happenstance
To find this piece of ground
There was a peaceful feeling
Closed in by trees and bush
I chose to lie upon the sod
So soft — so green — so lush
As I lay in reverie, in dream
Is what it seemed to be
There came a tune, soft and low
Yet, so like a rhapsody
The murmur of tiny voices
One would strain to hear
The tripping sound of footsteps
I felt it all so near and clear.
Is this true — how can it be
This place, I’ve see before
But now, it seems transformed
I’m shattered to the core
The music’s soft and so sweet
And the voices very clear
Then to me, as in a vision
A scene of beauty does appear
There before me as by magic
Are tiny people by the score
Dressed in color, of every hue
And costumes as of yore
A little bearded fellow
Took upon himself to speak
He said — we are your friends
His voice — barely a squeak
We are the little people
Not seen nor known by all
Yes, we are the Nether Folk
If you are in need, please call.
A perfect day after two days of rain. That too served a purpose because all around had been turning dry. It’s an early summer day and the air is very still. Even the bird song, usually loud and clear at this time of day is muted. I have just now let out my four legged companion, my dog, Duchess. She took care of her morning dailies and found a place in the rays of the sun She is content as she curls into a ball on the ground.
As I watch her for a moment, my thought is, how comfortable and happy she seems lying there in the sun. It’s so pleasant out I almost feel like lying there myself. However, I decide to pass up that idea. I think Instead, I’ll take a walk. My walking stick is handy just inside the door. Off I go heading down the road. About a quarter mile along I turn off onto an old logging road. Sometime ago it was blocked off to vehicles, but it is fine for walkers, at least, for half a mile or so. That suits me fine. The quietness lulls me into sort of reverie. From it I am suddenly awakened by a loud and crashing sound. Startled, to say the least, I look ahead and hardly fifty yards away, a big buck deer is making tracks to leave me standing there. My heart was a’pounding with the suddenness of it all. Now I have seen deer close up and never turned a hair but this one was a noisy beast, and came crashing through the trees. Truth be told, he was probably was more frightened than I.
Settling down, I walked on further into the woods. The road is rough. Cutters had been through there and had not left it as they should. Slash from the downed trees was left just anywhere. I made a mental note to talk to those in fault. Now I have been around a while. When young, I saw horses pull the loads. The wood roads crews made and used were not torn up as machinery does so now. Slash was left in piles. The road that they made was clear. If you were to walk one of those roads today, where modern machines have never been, even though trees have grown there, one could see the paths men and horses traveled and left without signs of ruin.
At the beginning of this walk I had intentions of just a walk along the road. I never thought to walk the old woods roads but I am glad I did. The part of the road I have written of actually belongs to me. It runs across the back end of my property. When the cutters were working on another person’s land adjacent to mine they asked permission to cut a road across mine because of a large brook that flowed through. I allowed it, but after seeing the havoc they wreaked, I am sorry I gave them the permission. to do so. That is water over the dam tho. Speaking of water, there are many brooks running down the mountain behind me. They all merge into a bigger brook that runs parallel to this property. There is sort of a gorge there. I really have not investigated that part of my land. I shall another day
I think it is about time for me to start home. I have to climb up a fairly steep bank and through some pretty dense woods to get to my home. That part of the woods is where the little people live. That part of my walk will have to wait for an early morning start
Another day, another early morn. I awake with a start. It’s as if someone or something wakened me and said it’s time to arise. Rays of the early morning sun are streaming through my most eastern window. Tis then I realize, I promised myself that I would walk my woods again to try to find life that I once before had seen and thought so mysterious. Little people that I learned were called, the ‘Nether Folk’. I recall how enthralled I was to see them and meet the fellow, much bigger than the Nether Folk who seemed to be their leader, or, was he their protector? Later, I learned he was a Leprechaun. I did not know that such existed in our country. Am I going to learn more?
It amazes me how much these woods have grown since my being here last. The trees seem taller and thicker. Of course I should realize that it has been a long time and life, even in the woods, does not become stagnant.
I do not hear or see any signs of life, other than the sounds of small animals such as squirrels and the like. I walk very quietly, I am hoping to maybe, see a deer, perhaps frightened and on the run. I look around to try to get my bearings because want I to reach the most likely place to see what I am looking for. It would be perhaps a clearing, sheltered by real heavy growth. At a sound behind me, I turn and find to my amazement, the Leprechaun I spoke of following me. He was dressed in colorful clothes with an odd hat. I was, as you might think, dumbfounded. Speaking to me in sort of a sing-song voice, he asked why I was walking through that are. Deciding on the truth, I explained what I had heard about little folk and their living in the woods. Are you talking about the ’Nether Folk’? I guess I am, I answered. I do not know of them. I own these woods and wanted to find out who was residing here, and, all about them. He told me that they are afraid of people. Hearing that, I said they have nothing to fear about me. I will take you to them and tell them that you are a land owner and wish to be friends with the. You must promise never to hurt them in any way and to respect their wishes. I will, I said. He told me then, if you ever do, there will be a curse on you.
Lead on, I said, I agree with all you ask. The Leprechaun told me to be silent, that he would approach the Nether Folk to see if they would be willing to take me into their circle. He was not fearful of them but respected their privacy. He was back in a few minutes and taking my hand led me into a large clearing. How could I have missed it? The clearing had the appearances of always having been in the same spot. I was astounded by the number of little folk sitting there and all looking so solemn. Their looks gave me the impression that I was really not welcome. My new friend, the leprechaun, started to speak to them. The language he spoke was totally foreign to me. In answer there was a buzz of odd sounding voices. This does not quite cover the description of what I want to say. It was more like a squeaky buzz, then growing to almost a roar. There was an angry sound to it. The leprechaun did not seem to be bothered by it. At the same time, the countenances of the little folk seemed change to that of pleasure and welcome. Amazing!
I should mention the mode and color of dress of the little folk and their size. They wore little suits of odd shapes in all colors of a rainbow, shoes that looked like pointed slippers and hats to match in color. Here, in my woods it was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. The ground was soft and mossy, their work, I believe. Tall trees surrounded the area, so majestic. I was spellbound by the beauty of it all. Everything was symmetrical, yet, so natural, I’m dazed.
Suddenly, softly, music comes to my ears. As I look around most of the Nether Folk have an instrument in their hands, instruments such as I have never seen before. The music is soft, beautiful in sound. One by one, little folk move into the center of the clearing and begin to dance, so gracefully, smiling, laughing, having so much fun.
There is a little fellow, I hadn’t noticed him before. An Elder, I assume. He is bearded. Now that I see him, I wonder how I missed him. He is just a bit taller than the others and is surrounded by some others in an animated talk. As I watch, he breaks away and heads directly to where I sit. He speaks to me in words I understand. He has invited me to join in all the fun. His voice is so musical, I am enthralled. I ask about the Nether Folk. He says, we can talk about it later; then I join the dancers.
It’s getting late and I must go. My dog Dutchess, awaits. So, I leave and swear to return another day.
I am back on yet another day to look around. The nether folk have captured my full attention. I cannot stay away. That they have come here to grace this land with their presence has me all aglow. As I approach the area where I last saw them, I am wary. Have they left to perhaps find a spot more to their liking? Oh no! I think to myself, that cannot be. Then, I hear a murmur of soft music. My heart leaps with joy. They have not gone away. I feel a shiver, someone is watching me. I look about and standing almost at my side is the ‘Elder’ of yesterday. He speaks out to say, yesterday, you asked about my people here. All is not just as you see it. They are my charge. You see, I am older than you think as you look upon me.
Over two hundred years ago, I rescued a young boy of ilk you are watching here. In those days there was a practice that was to be carried out forever. If one saved another from death, the savior was bound to the one he saved and his family forever. I know what you are thinking. Should it not be the other way around? That is, that the saved be bound to his savior. Strange custom, you say, but you must understand how I feel about it. These Nether People are my children, each and every one. I love and protect them as such. They look upon me as, ‘The Old One’. They don’t know how old I am. I am bound to them forever, so it will go — Infinite.
I look around to ask a question of ‘The Elder’. He has disappeared.
The music and dancing continues as I sit, lost in thought, I fall asleep. When I awake, there is no one there. Was it all a dream? The ground is all soft and mossy and clear. Here and there, tiny bits of color float in the air, as I head for home and my dog, Duchess.
Tis strange, I feel as though I’ve lived here two hundred years or more. These lands of mine are ever changing. Yet, to me, they remain the same. I roam this bit of heaven — that is what it is to me, from one corner to the next. In every tree and in every little brook I cross, there is a memory. I see as in a dream, folks from other places, other lands. They have come to share with us our bounties and they sure are welcome. They do not come empty handed. It’s the charm of other countries that they bring.
I’ve been thinking as I rove about, what a pleasure it might be if I can find the little people once again. The Nether Folk have been quiet and been seldom seen. Just as every little time goes by, I’m asked to join them in their fun. O’ what a party it could be. The little folk are colorful but now wait and see, when the colors of other places are mixed with those of the little folk, the party will go on loud and clear. The color will be dazzling, the song will be trumpeting through the air. The little folk will start the dancing and my feet will do so too. The trees will shake and do a rhumba and the brooks will do their rippling and flow throughout the land. The winds will sing a serenade to the people of the world, through the woods will be happiness as never known before. All good things must end. This day is done and gone. The party is over for the day. Maybe we will do it again tomorrow.
Wake up! Wake up! I hear a call and then, I am awake; tis dreaming I was, away out in the woods. I shake my head to get the cob webs out but still my head rings with the sound of music and wild laughter. Can it be that I am still asleep and dreaming? All the noise seems to come closer and louder still. I put my feet on the floor; at least I think that I do. There comes a knock on my door, and then it opens real wide. There standing inside — O’ how can it be? There is my friend, the big Leprechuan, who brought me to the little folk that live in my woods. Get up! Get up, he says to me. We have some traveling to do. We’ve no time to waste. I’m up and I’m dressed and ready to go, though I be in a quandary, I am not sure where I am. There is no time for breakfast, says the leprechaun to me. Today we must go away far in the woods where the Nether Folk are waiting with their all friends. Those are the ones from other countries you know. Today is one for a big celebration. What it is for, I have no clue.
If this is a dream, I am enjoying it fine, though I would like to awaken to see where I am. This part of the woods is so strange to me but I can hear the talking of all the small animals, to each other and to me. The deer are in hiding and the bear can’t be seen. Still, when we party I know that they are there. Now, wouldn’t you like them to join in the fun? I would and get to know them and see where they go when they want to be quiet and maybe to sleep. Do they have two apartments as some humans do? Is one just for the winter in which they sleep through?
I still don’t know if I am asleep or awake, but I’m having fun, never-the-less. I think I will lie down in this soft mossy bed and take a rest for just a short little while. I do, and fall asleep in the wink of an eye. That sleep, I don’t know how long it did last. When I woke, it was so quiet and dark. As I looked around there was naught to be seen, except trees and their shadow from the light of the moon. Another might say it’s eerie and scary. Not I. It’s so calm-like and peaceful to me. Then far out in the woods I hear the beat of a drum and other instruments sounding soft but so clear. The little folk were partying under the stars. I get up and hurry toward the sound. Before I know it, they are all around. I’m there with the Nether Folk, but still alone. I think of some friends who might like to be here.
Suddenly a thought comes to me. I have a young friend, Jackson, by name. He loves all animals but I don’t think he’s met, people like mine who live in the woods. Some day he will visit and he and I will walk in my woods. He may not see them the very first time but he will come back, I am sure. Jackson can name and draw pictures of all of the animals that live in the woods. I am sure he can do it better than me.
Now I hope that the little folk have not gone away as this is the first time I’ve been with them at night.
Now, I be sure that there are some that think maybe that I am a bit short in the head. Be that as it may, I’m having fun, and, just perhaps, if they will admit it, they are too. I find that I am too excited and worked up. The noise of the celebration is seeping into my very bones. I want to dance and play with the Nether Folk and their friends, those who came from other places. They are a fun loving group and are just as colorful as the little people. The little people as I sometimes call the nether folk belong to these woods. They have made friends quickly with he visitors from other places in the world. By doing so, they have a place in my woods and my heart. The music goes on. It is a pleasant mixture of two worlds coming together in a wonderland. It is made of trees, plants of every kind. It is beautiful and peaceful to watch the many mountain streams cascading down to join with a very large brook at the bottom.
Just over the other side of the brook and up a steep rise is where the celebration is continuing to rage. The music is raucous and beautiful at the same time. The folks add to the beauty because of their dress which is all the colors and styles of the world. I sigh, knowing that the celebration is about to come to an end. The nether folk and those from other places mill about hugging one another and saying their goodbyes. They will meet together another day.
I too am sad to see it all end. I know however that there will be another day.
Where will the little people sleep tonight? I think I know the answer, and mull it over in my mind as I too, head for home.
Dawn has arrived in what was the deep dark blackness of the night. I am awakened from the stillness of a voice from the recent past.
It is strangely familiar, O’ I wonder, can it be? I look all about but get no clue ’til, I hear you say, yes Charles, it’s me. Then the voice loud and clear bids ~ look in the corner here. Gosh! How could I not have recognized that voice from the recent past? O’ but now I see the bewhiskered face of a friend, who befriended me in my time of need and introduced the ‘Little Folk’ to me, and, me to them. It seems as though it has been ages, but no, it’s only that I have missed them cavorting in their land and mine. Welcome, little people, come and stay with me, forever more. Now, Elder of the little ones, I must leave you all for a bit. You see, I am building a place with my son who has heard so much of you from me. We can, and will, be altogether, the Old One, you all, and me.
Well now, how could I resist hurrying back to ask: where have you been? The elder answered, we have never left. You see, winter weather means little to us. We have decided we like it here and you seem happy to have us. Thank you for your invitation to stay and feel free to join us at any time. You will be surprised at what we can do . Call on us when you are in need. Now listen up, as you might say, tonight we are having a party and you all have to come. All of us expect that you will all be there. We want your voices in song, along with ours as a celebration of the coming spring. Wear ye all your best colors, come happy, we will see that you stay that way.
With that, the Elder gave us each a goblet, beautiful in all colors and hand made. He said, bring this with you, we’ve made a magic potion that we would like to share. We will be there, I said, I will gather all my clan. You must come prepared to have some fun. Leave any care you may have, behind. I think he said, everyone, man, woman and child will go home happier than you have ever been. With that said, he twirled around in a dancing step, and was gone as if he were a wraith.
Wraith or not, he is the driving force among the, Clan of the Little People. I will be back in a short while — Party time!
Chapter 2
I am back and all excited about being with the little people once more. It is going to be a party. We are all invited to be there. That includes Jackson, Fiona and Gramps (their grandfather and my son Bruce). The little people will be very happy if they can come. We do not know anything about the party; only that it is going to be very special. The little people have given Gramps and me each a beautiful goblet with all the colors of the rainbow on them and we are to bring them with us. They are very big. The little people must be very strong to hold them. I will see if we can get one for you Jackson and Fiona. We do not know yet if Maura, my grandson’s wife is going to be at the party because she may have to work.
The party sounds very mysterious because they will not tell us anything about the Goblets or what they are for. We were told that the little people have made a special drink that they want us to share with them. We will soon know what it is. We have come a long way without any sign of the little people and I wonder if I took a wrong turn someplace. Suddenly there is the sound of music from behind a group of enormous trees. There comes what appears to be a small army of the little people, dressed in all types of clothing and colors you can’t imagine, funny hats and odd looking shoes that look like slippers. They were led by the Leprechaun, whom I had met before. Welcome to our home, he said, but there were no houses.
He led us into an enormous clearing with very big trees all around but with a clear view of deep blue sky above. Find a seat and be comfortable said the Leprechaun. There were no seats but the ground was soft as a pillow with deep lush growing moss. A heaven on earth was my thought. Soft music seemed to flow from the trees. The little people, in ever growing numbers, started to sing along with the music. I have never heard such a melodious sound before or such beauty ~~ unbelievable in such a setting, theirs and mine. I cold not understand the words. They were singing in their own language. It did not matter.
The music was beautiful to hear and the voices the same. Now, here comes the Leprechaun and it appears he wants a word with us. He beckons that we meet him with the little people. As he approaches us he is proffering a bundle to us gingerly which I take from him in the same manner. The Leprechaun explains, it is just their way of showing appreciation for our accepting them to live in concert with us in the woods. I answered: these woods are theirs and mine. His bundle contained two goblets just as beautiful as those given to Bruce and me.
They were for Jackson and Fiona. How wonderful! The leprechaun went on to say, be very careful of them. The goblets are over two hundred years old, all of them. Not only that, also, they carry in them, unseen, a wish for the owner. It is for a lifetime of happiness, good health, loving family and good friends. You will note, that I did not wish for you, wealth. That Stems from all the others. The goblets are a magical mystery from wise and gentle spirits of long ago. Take care, never hurt another. The potion within the goblets will take care of you.
Now friends, let the party begin! With that, came the ringing of bells, such as I’ve never heard, loud but not sharp, soft, as tho muted by velvet, sounding as an offering of love for all. The clan’s soft squeaky voices were as musical lightning strikes to one’s heart. The Nether Folk were having themselves a ball. We will find girls and boys somewhere; Jackson and Fiona can have some fun. We can ask to the leprechaun to help us, or, Jackson can go out on his own. Who knows what he might find in these woods.
The Nether Folk have decorated many of the trees so it really looks like holidays are here. One thing I have noticed, I spoke of it before. The woods about are very thick, one can hardly see out at all. However, if you were to look up, the sky is clear as can be. It’s been so a great day, I know I won’t want to go home. The air is cooling down a bit but the Little Folks are on the ball. They have several little fires all about. I wonder if they are telling stories, I think I will check it out. First though, I believe I will lie down on the mossy ground and take a rest. Later Folks!
Hello. Good Day to all. I am back, I think, tho still a bit groggy from sleep. My gosh, I’ve slept the night away. The mossy bed was better than my bed at home that has mattresses made of down. Some of the little folk, whom I had not met at my home, were quiet, I think, feeling, as strangers. The dreams I had were both scary and beautiful. There will be a lot to tell, much later. In my dreams I met the Green men. Their history is quite wonderful. They can appear at will, at any place, as big people or small. Sometimes they come as animals, you never know what they really are. It is told that they are the gods and goddesses of the forests. I must learn more about the Green Men and I will tell it to you when I do. They are very mysterious. We will learn more in time. Now, I have spent too much time on the Green Men that I don’t know enough about, to tell. I want to see my friends, the Nether Folk to see what they are doing and if they are well.
As I approached, not a sound could I hear, very unusual I thought, I wondered, did they leave? I felt a surge of disappointment pass thru me like a cloud crossing the sky. Why would the little folk leave without even a goodbye. As the thought ran through my mind I heard a cry, a whoop of joy and there stood the Leprechaun, a big grin filling his face he ran to me and hugged me and said, “We all thought you had gone away.”
I answered with a smile and hugged him back. “I will not ever leave without, in some way letting you all know why. You are my neighbors and my friends and I love your parties. Your Songs and Dance make me feel more alive than I ever felt before.”
The little people sang and danced for me and asked that I join in. I sang a bit but had trouble mastering their dance. They are so graceful and I, stiff as a pin.
The Leprechaun drew me aside and said, “We all are hungry. Will you please share our meal?”
With all the dancing I had done, I was hungry too. There were no tables, no chairs, but as before, the soft, mossy ground was better than a living room chair. Make yourself comfortable said my Host. My meal was served on plates by the little people; I guess you would call them plates. They looked like monstrous tree leaves hardened so as to be able to be held in one’s hand. No knives nor forks nor spoons, a picnic in the woods. I felt like a king with my subjects doing all for me. The meal was lavish. There was food such as I have never seen or tasted ever before. As always with the little folk it was a party. Dancing, singing, laughing ~ ~ we all joined hands and formed a circle, sort of like a wheel with spokes made up of little people. Surprisingly, a man dressed as a prince, all clad in green appeared in the center as the hub. Our first Green Man, I think. What could have been better to end a party and the day?
Good morning to all my friends, the Nether Folk, the Green Man. It looks like a wet morning and I wonder what you Nether Folk will do to keep warm and dry. I realize you have the powers to take care of all your needs. I know also that when I am with you, I will share some of the benefits you get from your power. Thank you for that.
Well now, didn’t we all see our first Green Man yesterday at your song and dance party which I think we all enjoyed to the hilt. I think the Green Man enjoyed it also. He showed it by his laughter as your wheel of life and love turned around him. It was just a wonderful day. I wonder what sort of mystery this day will bring. The Green Man himself will work magic of his own. I keep saying, He and Him, but we do not really know if he is really as he appears. Do not forget, the Green Man can appear — in whatever form he wishes for us to see. Now I must rest a bit again. All of this activity tires me out and the mossy ground is very inviting. Aha, I think the magic is at work. Tho it is still raining, my mossy bed is warm and dry. The start of another day, I was up early and took a walk to the Nether Folks’ camp out, I guess you might call it that. For the time it is their home and they seem to love it as such. Every place one looks is neat as a pin.
I do notice one thing. The Nether Clan is growing. There are many more little people here than just a day or two ago. It makes me happy that they have chosen these woods for a home. Now, they are stirring. Activity is picking up and they realize I am here. The quiet of the woods is broken by their boisterous greeting. I am pleased that they have made themselves at home. Now, I see the Green Man, who, danced with us in the circle. But wait, there is something new here. I see a group of folk that seem even smaller than the little people. They are all colorfully dressed and look so vary nice. Suddenly, the Leprechaun appears. He says that these new folks are fairies. He says that they will bring pleasures to us, they are good.
The little peoples music makers appear as from nowhere and dancing begin. All of these folks are so fun loving, it is really amazing. Of course, I join in the partying. I have come here alone, but, when with the Nether Folk, you are never alone.
The music and the singing is getting louder and louder now. I must go to where it is coming from. On the way the Leprechaun joined me and I asked him about the noise being so loud. The Leprechaun said that the Elder of the Nether people had invited all the little people of the world to join him and the Nether Folk in celebration of the existence of all their clans. The new comers sure are noisy. They bang on anything that will produce loud sound. They are at the same time very helpful in keeping everything picked up. The whole area is spic and span. If I did not mention they have magic in their hands. They can change the colors of their clothing just by rubbing it with their hands. They can cause it to sparkle in the night or day. To me, they seem to be just a little fey, but, I just love all the little people; I would not want them to be any other way. It seems to me that each division of the clan has a bit of magic all their own. They use it sometimes for fun, but, always for doing good. One thing for you to remember, they are very small; be careful where you step. Now folks, I have been forgetting, this is a very special party for all the clans. We have been attending by invitation, let’s join in the fun. This is to celebrate the existence of all the unusual people of the world, the Nether Folk (little people), Leprechauns, the Green Men and the Fairies and perhaps more to come.
Now, I have seen these little folk, time and time again, it seems, but never have I seen a party as happy and wild as this. The mingling of the little ones from all over the world and the varying dress and colors is all but unbelievable. The singing and dancing are in such different styles, it is magical to watch. I feel as though I am a part of it, still not. I could not compete. Now, they are breaking up in smaller groups, though, still lively. The little ones seem to be having serious discussions amongst themselves. The music is louder now, I can almost feel it humming through my body as though it were another part of me that I do not recognize. The humming escalates, as it does my whole being is, it seems, to be electrified with such a pleasant feeling. I do not want it to cease.
I feel a presence beside me and look around. A person if I can really describe him as such, stands just behind me. I’ve seen pictures of this person, was my impression. O’ yes, I recall it, now I know. It is what, the leprechaun once described to me as,
the Green Man. Again I feel that strange hum in my body. Yes, I say to myself, the Green Man is the cause. He is said to be magical and can change his appearance from man to beast or spirit. No one at all seems to be in fear of him. I think~ ~I will
try to follow suit. It may be difficult as I feel my body tingle. Now, the Leprechaun and the Elder are standing on either side of me and are urging me to be calm. I have the feeling I may light up at any time. The features of the Green Man do not induce what it takes to relax and be unfrightened, I will give it a try. Then, as I turn to see the Green Man, he is no longer there. He is gone my eyes are telling me ~~ the tingle continues but now I see a well dressed man. He merely says, hello, why don’t you and I join the celebration? With that he walks away. I cannot refuse and follow him and I wonder is this Green Man, a he, a she, man or beast? Should I follow him? What can be the harm? I find myself in the midst of laughing, swirling bodies, having fun. The Green Man, the handsome man, whichever, has disappeared. I feel alone and disappointed. I wish for his return.
There is a strange and eerie silence now, the music has stopped. What were small groups of the little folk are together, all in one. Darkness has settled, the dancing is done. The Elder and the Leprechaun, silently have left, the little folk remain. I will say my good-byes, head for home and perhaps dream it all.
The Green Man remains a mystery to me.
When he is near I feel a surge of his power
Over me and all about, still, I feel no fear,
Will that change as we reach the midnight hour?
Nothing unforeseen has happened through the night and early morn or even through my dreams. I am thankful for that. I think of all the work of cleaning up the little folk have to do. It’s time to pay the piper for all the fun we’ve had, not for the clan alone. As I approach the campsite of the little people, I hear not a sound. The grounds around are spic span clean. There is not a soul to be seen. These Nether Folk are amazing. They do not ever tire, so it seems. I am greeted with shouts and whistles as I. come near. There is no, what I call the Green Man and, no Leprechaun. I will stay with the Nether Folk and help, if I can.
Chapter 3
Another Nether People’s party is over and done. It seems those little people never tire of singing and having their fun. They are boisterous and playful but never do harm. I am constantly in amazement at the work they can do. When they decide to party, there is no question, no asking for help. It is all set up and started before anyone else knows if there is to be one. The announcement is carried by the noisy music they seem to enjoy making, tho it is hard on the ears, but welcomed by all as they come. Color in clothes of all sorts by them is a must and they are pleased if the guests try to outdo them. Of course the reason is: they can change whatever they are wearing at a whim. If I haven’t mentioned it, their musical instruments look strange as does the music they play. It starts off sort of wild but very quickly turns to a very soothing sound, a slow and low beat of a drum.
The sound is so calming it is making me sleepy. I am going to find a soft vacant spot and turn in for at least a short rest and who knows, it may be for much longer. Good night folks, God Bless. I will, surely return.
Hold on, hold on! Who is pulling on my shoulder, I shout but calm down as I hear the voice of the Elder. He said, “I thought you would want to say goodnight”. We left together and hurried to where the party was still going strong. Not too many had left. The Elder and the leprechaun made a motion for us follow them. We did and came to another clearing. Gathered were almost all of the visiting little folk; they came to meet us, hug and say goodbye. A spokesman for them told us how happy they were to meet us, to play, sing and dance with us and invited all to come to their lands. They came from all over the world. I didn’t know the Clan of Nether Folk was so large. A small number of these visitors asked if they could stay and live with us for a while, we were happy to say, yes, for as long as you wish. They were so happy, all their musical instruments out in the open as by magic and a party started all over again. Singing and dancing was the thing to do, talking and hugging too. It was wonderful for me as well, just to think that they wanted to make my forests their home and to treat them as their own. As time passed the strangers, the new little people withdrew and formed smaller groups and lo and behold showed us tricks we had never seen before. There were gymnasts and jugglers of all sorts, very adept at their particular specialty. I have never seen elasticity in bodies flying, (it seemed) through the air, twisting and turning, long drops ~ ~ recovering in mid-air. It was all so breath taking to watch. All the while music makers provided a background of music adapted to thrill one and all watching such a show. I, for one, could hardly believe what I was seeing. It was just a magical scene.
As the show ended, there came a very loud humming, much deeper than that I’d heard before. Suddenly everything in my vision all turned to a solid color ~ green. It was scary to see. Then, not surprisingly appeared the Green Man dressed up in all natural, but sparkling green. Time for a rest. After an hour or so of dozing, I come awake with a start from a dream that I was alone high in the air, but, it did not last. What had startled me, was Jackson and Fiona tickling me with branches from a tree. We came to say goodbye, because we have to go to school. Our friend, that you see, wanted to meet you. She is a Nether Girl and is from a country called Spain, don’t you think she is pretty? Sylvia is her name. Then they were gone, to be on their way to learn about others from far, far away. I called out to them. Do not say goodbye. Just say, anon, be happy, ‘til then. Those words to all are mine for tonight.
Well, well, me very good friends, to all of ye Nether Folk, whether right here or far away I’m back from my short (?) sabbatical. Here I hope to stay for as long as ye will have me around. I’ve been to other countries, some very far away. I have visited all your kinfolk who miss you very much and ask that you all keep in touch. They fed me so much I can hardly walk to get to my plane but I will be back to see you once again. Be on guard for thieves who cut down trees trying to leave the forest bare. Think Green!
As it is with the little people, or Nether Folk as we have known them, a party ends, another begins, they are so happy and delightful, spontaneous, to add. They sing and play, make music as they work but you know all that, you have seen and heard it all before. Listen up now, don’t you hear the slow but distant drum beat that permeates the air. The beat differs from time to time signaling who is arriving, one has to learn their music if one really wants to join in on the fun. It is simple once you try it I have found. Deep beats mixed with light taps in between all mixed up to send a message almost like reading a book. What is it now that changes all of the atmosphere around you. It hangs heavy in the air, or so it seems. The trees appear to close as one thick woods. Absolute silence, gathers through the shimmering trees. The sound of beating drums draws closer now, somehow the beat gives one an eerie feeling of being all alone, but then a sudden change takes place. The drums stop beating, a sort of rippling breeze flows all about. EERIE!! And here comes the
Green Man, he’s dressed in a dark green suit with sparkling emeralds on every thing, even down to his shoes. He and his entourage look beautiful but somehow, strangely forbidding as they encompass everything in their path or so it seems. All is church-like quiet then, until the Green Man raised one arm to circle it in the air. The drums came to life, instruments we had not seen made music such as that we never heard before. The Nether Folk and the folks in green joined hands in a circle to dance to the music that permeated the forest, so thick with trees.
Chapter 4
Good morning all, here I be once again to tell you all I know about the little people known to you and me as “The Nether Folk. Never do we know what will happen as we all get together to be with an old friend or, a surprise. Surprises are always fun, are they not? I think, I do not have to tell you, this will be a party as always, when the little folk let us know just what they have in mind. Do you hear the heavy drum beat as it may be from far away? Do you hear the sweet and gentle music that sounds as if nearby. There is nothing in sight tho. These little people are tricksters and will make you laugh, sometimes almost cry, They have no tears. By gosh, aren’t they sly, they can turn your tears and sadness into laughter, at their whim. However I digress.
Here now comes what looks like a line of marching bands, made up of little folk and led by a surprise, our good friend from many parties of the past, the big Leprechaun. He travels with the Nether folk and watches over them. His clothes, as ever differ from those of all the rest, mixed colors like I’ve never seen before, a cocked hat. I call it fore and aft. His shoes are pointed and turned up at the toes. They look like the Egyptian ships of the far, far away and long ago, so very long ago. He looks so very fanciful, I swear, he must be a hit with all the ladies young or old.
Leprechauns are mischievous I’m told, but this fellow has never done me any harm. Maybe he has played a trick or two on me like the time he told me where to find a pot o’ gold and I found a sack of ‘taters instead. That was ok because I surely like to eat. The Nether Folk do love him. He protects them from all harm. Now there I go again, I am getting off my track. That which I want to tell you is that the nether folk have put the Leprechaun in full charge of the party. Let us all sit back a bit and watch the fun. That big Leprechaun was mighty and he picked three of the little people to work with him in the woods cleaning up around the camp site. Because there was no noise, one of the little folk went to see if all was ok. He found the three little fellows just playing in the area. No Leprechaun. Where is the Leprechaun the little fellow asked, the reply was, he said he was tired and was going to lie down for a rest, so we finished the job ourselves. The mighty Leprechaun would never live that down. The four little folk returned to the campsite to join in the merriment with their friends. The mighty Leprechaun slept on. I, shall rest.
Well, it is said, there be no rest for the weary and I believe that to be true because these little folk are hauling on me to get up. They say there should be no sleeping while there is a party going on. So be it, I shall join the festivities wherever they may take me. The drums and music are now together and in harmony. The Leprechaun is speaking now and says, let’s all dance and change partners as we do. O’, I neglected to tell you that he had wakened and was already to party. I am not so sure that I agree. Then again, he can be so much fun. A long line starts to form for the dancing and turns into two circles one within the other and wouldn’t you know, the Leprechaun is in the very center. While he’s dancing he completely changes clothes without being seen. It seems he has some magic power that allows him to do this as often as he wishes. I am told though that if he misuses his power in any way to harm that he will be banished forever from all use of his power. I hope that will not happen because he does so much good. The dancing goes on and the participants are very happy and singing. Even the on-lookers are singing and tapping their feet. It sort of puts me in the mood also. Well any dancing I do, will, I think, be strolling off to a bed of soft green moss under a beautiful pine tree. Goodnight all, God Bless.
Before I take my leave, I would like to say,
I will be back ta play wi ye anither dae.
God Bless and hold ye in His arms an’
Protect ye frim al’ harm, thas me wish tadae.
So now me lads and lassies I hope ye al’ had fun, an’ as I sed before, good life, love and laughter, may they be yers foriver more.
Chapter 5
‘Twas a good rest I had last night after the partying but I am glad that I did not miss the occasion. The Leprechaun sure looks like he’d be a heart breaker as he laughs and plays and dresses as he did last night. I think I’ll take it slow and easy for this day. It’s a lonely feeling that’s come over me and I know the cure. The thick green forest is calling me and I must go and tho I feel lonely, I must be by myself. Does that seem like a conundrum to you or have you felt the same? The sound of animals, small and large is comforting to me and I go on, no longer alone.
Once again I’ve wandered from my story but I will return to it, post haste. In fact, I did not really go away. These parties give me so much pleasure I dislike to be away too long. I think the Nether Folk feel that way too as they crowd about me asking where I’ve been. I try to explain, I have a home that needs looking after — That is as far as I got with that — Your home is here and we need you to be close to advise us in things that come up for us to do.
The Nether Folk accede to my wishes when I tell them how tired I really am from partying day and night with them, and so I rest. Days go swiftly by for me, there is so much activity. My nights are long because I dream of things that bother me and do not understand. It is on this note I hear a knock upon my door. I open it to find the Green Man standing there, looking grim. I need your help, he said. The Nether Folk are my friends but it seems of late they are being a bit afraid of me. I think it is because of my unusual powers, tho I do not flaunt them. I realize that they tend to minimize theirs. I try to do the same with mine. Is there a way that we, in normalcy, can act together
and make it seem a usual thing to do? You are my best hope
to accomplish this. Lately, I have been thinking that I have powers of my own. Now, isn’t that scary? I am going to lie down to lie down and dream of this. What are your thoughts, dear reader?
I have had a short rest and am not much further along to solving the problem of what can be done to bring everyone together. One thought does come to mind. At the time Nether Folk from all over the world visited here, everyone, I think, had a wonderful time. Is it possible to duplicate that with the idea that activity and talk would bring realization to those involved, that what was pulling them apart could easily solved by pooling their powers to the advantage of both.
Later in the day I was surprised to see them working together on just that premise. I had not spoken to either party of my idea. That got me to thinking of what I actually said in jest a bit ago concerning, ‘powers of my own’, I will look into this. The plot thickens as ‘tis said in mystery. Perhaps, I am not dreaming these things at all. And so, as the light of day dims, mysteries of the night begin. I will see y’all on the ‘morrow.
Chapter 6
‘Tis a new day, I feel rested, my mind I clear. Very early this morning, my son Bruce came by, and after a bit, asked me, “Dad, what is bothering you?” After I explained my dilemma, he laughed and said, “you will come up with the answer as you always do.” Once again I hear the question run through my brain, do you have a bit of power that not known to you is evident\to others? I wonder, am I making my problem, if it is one, more difficult to solve?
I fear that you will not understand that I have writ. I will explain when you are at hand. As I have said now, my mind is now clear. The clan is gathering from near and afar. Most are here. As I have said, I have not mentioned my thoughts to anyone concerning, ‘powers’ and whether or not how far they reach. My suspicion is that ‘everyone’ has something, buried deep in his mind, controlled by the Master of all mankind. Bits of it may be set free if it’s to advantage of all. Therefore I’ll go on as in my every day with the hope my mind keeps on even keel.
The conversation and action continues to grow amongst all factions of The Nether Folk and their friends from near and far away. I am surprised because in the past I had noticed some little disagreements here and there even tho they did no last.
Something odd is happening that has everyone talking and pointing to the skies. I look myself to see an amazing sight. There appears to be a very thick blanket of leaves hovering over the entire area and the trees are winter bare. The ground is clear. Of a sudden the leprechaun and several Nether Folk appear together and start to dance, their arms raised and burst into song, one I never heard before. As they do, the skies clear, the leaves disappear and once more the trees are filled with shimmering leaves. A cheer of approval sounds through the woods and now everyone is dancing and singing in happiness. There is however a small group consisting of only Nether Folk from away, seemingly, pleased and happy of what has occurred.
I feel a tingling in my head and the thought again is there. What if—? Then it’s gone. Another impromptu party begins. It seems impossible to dampen the spirit of enjoyment in these People of the woods. I say, “Long live the Nether Folk and their ilk.”
The party is in full swing now. I do not have a full explanation of how it happened. If everyone is happy, why question it. The woods are ringing with the sounds of all sorts of musical instruments and Drums.
The Green Man has not been around for some time now. I wonder if he saw the colossal show of the blanket of leaves hovering over the woods. Just as I spoke of the Green Man, a loud rumble was heard through the area. Does he read minds? He has not appeared for some time now, I think he has not been in the area but no one can really keep track of him. Perhaps he will come along before the party is over. There goes that rumble again. People are on the move again watching for something to happen. Boom, Boom, Boom again then a loud clattering sound. That’s all. What is going on in these woods? There, over there, clouds of smoke can be seen and it is moving towards us. We all, the Leprechuan and the Nether folk are gathered together in amazement as a Monstrous engine is pushing through the trees but, not harming them. The green, dressed in his fanciest clothes
is at the front of the engine but does not appear to be driving it. Just when it seems that the monstrous engine
will mow down trees, it stops dead without sound and swinging down is the Green Man, laughing and waving. He is in control of everything now. I get down from the tree, I had climbed to get away from that monster, but I will be back folks, soon, I hope.
Chapter 7
I am back and wondering what and who started what happened here in the woods. Do you recall that I spoke of small group of Nether Folk from away were gathered together, happy and pleased with what had occurred? That got me to thinking – Could it be? The tingle in my head turned into a roar, so it seemed. That group of Nether Folk though happy, did not seem surprised. Just what is going on in the forest that causes my head to tingle but, does not seem unusual to some others? I am confused, the word ‘power’ keeps running through my mind. I say “power’ and again, I wonder, what could it mean and why. The thrill of all the excitement is passing now but memories don’t go away. To me there is something, is it an undercurrent of foretelling some future happenings. I think I had better leave it to the seers to unfold. All has been quiet for sometime now. It is really unusual to have so many Nether Folk and their kind gathered together in a state of stillness, no games, no music or singing, no displaying their magic. I miss all of that and yearn to return to it before very long. No sooner that said than the blare of large horns rang out. The Nether Folk are at it again. Maybe not tho, we have a mixed gathering here, more so than ever before, I believe. This time however there are many small groups and they are mixed, Nether Folk, the Green man, now a surprise, new faces, some people even smaller than the Nether Folk are here. I will inquire as to who they are. the answer identifies them as Fairies. The Leprechaun identifies them as good people. Everything is moving so fast I find it difficult to keep up.
I suspect that things will change very soon. It has been very quiet for such a large gathering. I think it is like a dam ready to break.
Folks, I am going to take a walk around. Perhaps I can find the reason for the quiet of this night. I doubt that I will be back very quickly. Good night all.
Are you ready? This should be a blast! Look at the list of players. The original Nether Folk plus those from all over the world, as we know them. Leprechauns (very playful) and do not forget the Green Man and the Elder. We will be introduced to the Fairies who we are told are a fun loving people and very wise. I am looking forward to a pleasurable time of greeting new folks and welcoming back the old. Here we go!! Boom Boom, like cannon shots, echo through the air. All this is a preview and a promise of what is to come. Lusty voices singing songs of the ago and today, bringing back memories, some long forgotten. And now, a long line of marchers, the end, unseen. Color, such as I have not ever seen obscures the person beneath. Shouts of joy and laughter emanating from the onlookers and paraders alike.
Coming out between the mass of trees is a carriage drawn by four horses in harness almost completely covered with what appears to be precious jewels. Look who is holding the reins, none other than the Green Man. Beside him is another Green man who looks like he could be a twin of our Green man. I wish Jackson and Fiona could be here to see all this grandeur. Perhaps they will another time, Look! The two green Men are waving now just as the carriage, horses and all, disappear, taking their place is a modern railroad car puffing along with what seems, hundreds of Nether Folk, waving and shouting greetings to we, the watchers of this beautiful scenery and the action that is taking place. That is not all. A large viewing stand rises from the ground. It is full of little people, Fairies, and people I have never seen before and maybe not again
Now, a mix of different peoples dressed as clowns and by the hundreds are streaming through the trees laughing and playing as they move along. The green men, those of different clans are dancing through the woods, indifferent to the tree growth in their paths. The crowds and their dress are as different as night to day. Now, all movement stops, people, one by one, begin to disappear. Gone are all our woods people as we know them, gone to where — we don’t know. However, we all know they will return, as will I — Bye, Bye, ‘til we are together once more.
I am back for a moment. Just want to say, it looks like our minds are working in tandem. seems like all is going to be OK.
Chapter 8
A’Ha! ‘Tis a brand new day and I am a’betting that I caught the most of you asleep at the switch, so to speak. Be that as it may, I be here to hear the left-over laughter from the night before. It was a time to remember, don’t you think? For me, it will be unforgettable because it brought everyone together to do their thing and appreciate that of the others as well. I believe that, the Green Man was instrumental in making it all such a success. It is important now, to impress on the mind of any newcomer to our group, the need of cooperation of one and all.
Let love, laughter and togetherness be our goal.
A thought, came to mind. All of this started with a leisurely walk in my woods. “My Woods” no longer applies. They belong to all that have the will to keep them green, clean and growing as they are, but as I always say “Be careful where you step”. The little people, (The Nether Folk) may be in your path.
So there, my readers and my friends, I’ve said me say, it’s your turn, I will listen to it all, and respond, in my best way. I can tell now by all the shouting, noise and laughter, the Nether Folk are in attendance waiting to have their say and, they will. The Elder, steps up and takes the mike, ers and ahs and shakes his head. I guess he can’t believe I’ve said me final word as yet.
Well sir, take the mike, ye be welcome, your following and mine await us. I will speak with you some other time; consider what I’ve given you as small talk. I will make it longer the next time; what do you mean, there may not be one, if I do not rhyme better?
Come all ye Nether Folk you sure did enjoy yourselves last night. So did I. It was quite a party. I am so glad all of you are getting together. I really think you are. Storms, horses and wagons, railroad engines, what will you think of next, that you can do to entertain? I am happy to have you near to my home. Before you came here, I walked my lands feeling, so all alone. Now I no longer have to be by myself. I have you as my friends and my neighbors. Please feel free to come by at any old time.
I am going to take a look around to see the condition of this land of ours. What I find is that all is in the condition as it was before that last party started. There is no debris left as one might expect after as many folk that did attend. All is clean as the proverbial whistle. Teams of horses and carriages, railroad engines and cars, viewing stands and people dancing through the small growth and trees – all that, yet not a bush trampled or a sign as evidence, that such a party took place.
Was all that magic or was it a miracle performed by a power unknown to man? When will we know? The Fairies, we are told have exceptional abilities but they are themselves so small!
The Green Man and the Leprechaun are very friendly now and are friends and advisors to the Nether Folk who are just a bit stand-offish, not wanting to give up what power they may have. The Fairie, sensing jealousy, ask for a meeting to bring them together as they were. All’s quiet now, some of the Nether Folk from other places have gone home. Each faction left moves toward the center and confers with the Fairies in hopes that a final decision can be made so that once again things will run smoothly. An agreement has been reached and the head of the Fairies will preside. All now is going smoothly, I can sit back and watch the proceedings. This night, there is no party, no music no drums, just the beating of hearts; everyone is happy to see the work is done. We will go on from here.
This has been a most unusual time for me. I’ve tried to get things running smoothly and keep everyone happy too but as we all know, there is no such thing as keeping everyone happy; I will try tho, who knows what patience and prayer can do?
Chapter 9
Good morning folks, if you all are ready, here we go once again. It’s time to take a walk around these woods to see what changes Mother Nature may have made while we were in absentee. Is everything in order, are there any unseen dangers we may have to cope with, as we walk the mossy earth ‘neath the trees? All is as we left it. One would never see any wheel tracks in that spongy ground, nor the tracks of teams of horses that had passed by. Those Nether Folk left nothing to happenchance. They cleaned up every whisker of any evidence that a party had taken place. O’ those Nether Folk are a wily clan. I think they have these parties just to stun the average man.
Here comes the Leprechaun with the Green Man along side. There are also several Fairies and goblins. The fairies are so very little it seems you could hold them in your hand. The Goblins are very scary and I am told they can be very bad but also good.
With the representatives of all these clans together, I have my suspicions that there is mystery or devious plans afoot. I wonder who will steer this group and whatever is in their mind. It really does not matter, any one or all together could change things all around. Will we be left hanging in wonder of, what’s going on? Will we be a part of it without our consent?
The Green Man and the Leprechaun have approached those of us left behind. They smiled and asked of us, would we agree to follow their lead and do the same as they did, and swore no harm would come of it, to anyone at all. With a bit of trepidation we agreed, at least that was my feeling. Was I in error and hasty?
No sooner had I agreed than I found myself in the air, upside down, the others that consented, flying all around me, making not a sound. My Mind was in order, my body did not respond but my sight was fine. It was like a flying circus, birds of every kind. No one of us resembled what we were on the ground. I thought in wonder, how can this all be? Then, we were in line and diving to the ground.
I thanked the Lord and those that put it all together that we arrived to earth intact. We were sadly mistaken if we thought that was the end. A Goblin and a Fairie said, it was their turn as a part of the agreement, to take us in hand and they did.
The Goblin, O’ gosh he was so ugly and scared me almost to death. The Fairie, so tiny and beautiful, I could not take my eyes away from her. Follow us they said. Of course we did, they were in charge from here on out. We were ushered to a bus that was waiting to one side. It was enormous and handsomely fitted out inside. The rugs were beyond description and the furniture would do a king beyond proud. The Goblin appeared in charge; he said to me, you are driving. The dashboard was loaded with levers and buttons and lights of different colors. The speedometer read, zero to 275. I almost lost it just thinking about driving it. The Fairie said climb in. Ill help harness you up, You must drive this bus three times around the track at it’s utmost speed. I started to arise from the seat but could not budge, the seat and harness automatically locked. The interior had all kinds of safety gadgets but they made me feel no better, then I heard a voice say, “start your engine” and, it did without my help. A ’go’ light lit up and I was off around the track. At one hundred miles an hour, I thought, this is a breeze. At one hundred seventy five, I could hardly breathe, the speedometer read two hundred but I could not read it. The Fairie said, you are almost there. The brakes took charge, I wondered, if in truth ‘there’ does exist; where be it?
I don’t recall escaping that bus or the track, but I guess I must have done so. I am safe on earth with no earthly folks to offer me a ride.
If in the future I have the desire to fly, I will skip the bus ride and the race track. I will opt to try a Lear jet non stop to ‘there’. Thus so, my forest inspection ended, but I’ll be back another time with perhaps a more exciting chapter to get your spirit soaring, but hopefully, not in the air. Maybe we can find ‘there’.
Chapter 10
Good day, my good friends, is it true, am I really back from the scariest and wildest ride I ever had? I have no wish to repeat it
tho it will live in my memory forever. My legs had no feeling when I stepped to the ground and my first thought was to kiss
dear old Terra Firma and I did. That Fairie was correct when she said, you are almost ‘there’. In this case, ‘there’ being kin to Terra Firma for sure. I wonder now, is my new dizziness caused by the ride or trying to put the last few lines I wrote in proper order? I will leave you, the reader, to figure it out.
The Nether Folk are conspicuous by their absence here today.
They are very secretive when talking about their activities and seldom do in advance. Today seems to be no exception so I guess we will have to wait and see. Meanwhile, further on into the woods, the various leaders gather by themselves. This too is unusual as each leader keeps close to his group. Do you suppose this is the result of our trying show them in the past, that working together makes them stronger than going it alone. Now, here is the Green Man, tho not in fancy dress as before. He too I guess, as we, will have to just wait and see.
An eerie feeling has come over me. Is trouble brewing here that may take our happiness away and leave us worried, and desolate? It seems the very atmosphere is heavy and yet alive with the waiting of a ‘something’ to appear. The Green Man is coming toward us, looking depressed, not the fun loving man we are used to seeing. I must leave you now. I will return after I have a look around.
Folks, here I am once more. How was my rest, I suppose you ask. Well it was long as you can see, or so it appears. There is not much I can say about it except that I am ok. Time went on as it usually does when I’m writing about my Nether folk. Now I am in a different stage of my bringing it to you. Time, as it goes on, has a way of changing things as you will see. I had a fall which ended in my hospitalization. I have been home for only five days. Just as soon as I can put things together I will be back with mysterious stories to thrill you. Until then, think about what it may be. Ha! Ha!
I have been asking around and the rumor is that there is a misunderstanding. That is all I could find out. I suppose we will have to wait and see what develops, eh?
The Nether folk are gathered together in a corner of the campground quietly talking amongst themselves, and the others are in small groups all about the area. There is sense of unease prevailing in the campground.
Now suddenly, the quietness has gone. Taking over is a very loud rumble and the sound of people screaming. Looking up I see nothing different, but in a moment all has changed. Gone is the campground as we have known it. The whole area is covered with deep snow and the trees are laden with ice. Everyone is snow covered. Large sleighs, drawn by coal black horses, are speeding toward us and moving swiftly by. Gone is the rumble of the sleighs. The Green Man and his cohorts are driving the sleighs and they all have musical instruments and are playing songs of winter. I must say that the Green Men were all dressed in beautiful winter outfits with shiny buttons that sent arrows of light as they drove by.
Wait up now, do not leave. Where there was snow and ice, all is green and summer like. Was it all just magic made by the Green Men? Will we ever know?
Sweet Christmas music fills the whole campsite. The Nether Folk come through tall green grass which has taken the place of the snow left by the Green Men. I have not ever seen the little folk dressed as colorful as they are now. Little banners of cloth in every color and shade adorn their hats and shoes and they all wear short jackets of silver and gold. As always each carries a strange looking musical maker of some sort. Their music is unique. As they pass, their music and vocals are like none heard before. I have been informed that what seemed to be unusual quietness before the day’s start was just a small thing between the Green Man and the Nether Folk. There was a disagreement for a bit as to who would be the first to appear. I believe the right decision was made. Look now, here come the Nether folk in all sort of dress. I don’t know how to describe their hats. The tops are peaked to a point and have an arrangement of feathers on the sides. Their jackets are fitted and have thin stripes of all colors. The little people sure know how to dress. They are super smart with color.
Well folks, I had something else in mind for today. However, I will hold it for another day. Y’all take care ‘til next time. Bye, bye.
Chapter 11
Hey! Here I am, back once more to see what is happening with those Little People in my woods. I really should call them, ‘our woods’ because when I told them to consider it that way, I meant it as such. All is very quiet.
Suddenly, a flood of noise breaks out, not too far away. There are shouts from voices, not readily recognized until a small group of Leprechauns, followed by Fairies, little people and wild looking creatures with odd laughing faces appear, altogether the weirdest band of folks ever seen at one time in one place. The Leprechauns and Fairies gathered together singing, loudly but beautifully, songs of strange places and dancing with the lightest moves known by man. The groups broke up and the whole area became as one big dance floor. It was sheer bedlam. It all started at the beginning of one day and continued into the dusk of the next – one wonderful and happy scene of happy, happy people. What is going on, what is happening here?
The Nether Folk now seem to be breaking away and forming a group away from the others. Now all of the others are forming individual small groups of their own. From the way all is moving, it appears there’s a plan afoot for this night. The Fairies and Leprechauns are mischief makers when they plan it so, and now they are close together. We have to watch them closely. Trouble is their game. Before this night over, I know they will cause trouble. Every other group can show their bitter side. Watch every one, keep track of each, if you can.
Now I’ve told you what I know for now. Trouble is brewing. Mark my words.
Hey! Is there a party going on?
Listen to that cacophony of music that seems nearby with not a music making instrument in sight, nor a person to play it. Now we are in densely wooded area but even as I speak it is opening up to a much larger treeless and open area. What has happened here? As I speak there is a very large roar and small open autos come speeding with no drivers and form circles in the cleared area. Now people in uniform appear beside each car carrying a musical instrument. I guess that accounts for the music heard earlier. Now I can make out that the each uniformed man is either a Fairie or small Leprechaun. Well, I told you they are tricky. Every car starts to move at high speed directly toward those of us standing in their path. Are they crazy? Then, as they are about to strike us—they disappear, every one of them completely out of sight and hearing. Is this going to be a bad day? I guess something else is brewing.
Wild Horses come toward us, prancing and dancing and circling around us snorting ~ a terrible sound to hear. Then there is a scream from afar and the horses stand quiet. The Nether Folk arrive, mount the horses and go off singing their fair songs.
It has been a very interesting day. I wonder what will be next on the agenda of our friends. I hope they will always be our friends and continue to live in our woods.
Nether Folk and all of your friends, you teach us much, stay with us.
Chapter 12
Here I be, back again with my friends the Nether Folk and others. I will share with my readers all that I know and learn about happenings since our meeting. Are you just as shaken as I am after facing wild horses and autos without drivers? I could write no more after those harrowing experiences. I will try to do better. As I write, the various clans are gathering together. Can’t you hear the clamor of drums and all the other instruments they bring to make us happy and keep us from sleep?
Our friends are wasting no time but I haven’t ever seen them lined up together as they are now. There is no order at all to separate the clans as we know them. Is this meeting going to be a bust for them or for us as spectators? Those words are hardly out than, a miracle is occurring. There are many flashes of light as the clans find their rightful places side by side as clan folk usually do line up. It has been a joy to see how orderly it was accomplished.
The Nether Folk are in front followed by Fairies and Leprechauns. As usual, The Nether Folk drummers and other smaller clans are furnishing the music which is now blaring loudly. The Leprechauns are performing all sorts of crazy tricks as always. The Green Man and his followers are just quietly marching along but never fear you will see them in sort of mischief, I am sure. There is what appears to be, a very long car, like a railroad car following at the end of the parade. I wonder what it contains. This is odd. It has no wheels.
The Nether Folk start off with their usual soft sweet music and wonderful voices in song. It soon turns into blaring music and drum beats that can be heard , I think, for miles away. The Leprechauns now are going in amongst the watchers and trying to get them to do as they do. Some can do things, most cannot compete with the Leprechauns but everyone is having fun. Everyone is very happy and that is what counts. The Green Men have been very quiet today. They have been hanging back by themselves. The Nether Folk are at it again, breaking up into small groups, going in amongst the watchers and trying to get them into the crowd. They appear to be having some success and it seems the watchers are becoming part of the different clans. They have joined the little Folk and the Leprechauns in their fun making and that is better for all. WAIT NOW, that long car with no wheels is moving. How can that be, it has nothing to make it run. It has moved around the circle of watchers. In turn the watchers have moved back away from the car. This is a mystery. Even as it moves forward, it appears to rise off of the ground. As it does one can see what looks like sticks, many in number, moving around and around under the car. The car moves faster and faster and as it does everyone can see that the sticks really are legs and bodies and that the bodies belong to the GREEN MEN. A fantastic feat for feet, eh? Feet yes, but there are keen minds behind all that flesh. I will say tho, I did not realize we had so many Green Men in the area. The car, looks like an old railroad car, perhaps rescued from a junk yard. It has made about ten swings around the cleared area. Everyone on the ground is cheering as it dives slowly. The feet and legs disappear as the car itself does likewise. Mystery o’ Mystery, what will our valiant representatives of the occult do next? I say occult in lieu of a better word.
As one might say, let us wait and see. Here come the Nether Folk in full dress and fashion. The color and make-up of these Little Folk are a miracle in itself. Tall hats with lights that sparkle in the dusky night, short jackets of silver and gold and flared trousers to match. The shoes, I think you can imagine. It was a wonderful sendoff in appreciation for the audience and their attention.
Chapter 13
I’m back. It was quite a vacation I had. Now I have to get together with the little folk to see what they’ve been up to. As I mention them, they appear and seem to be some agitated. I hope they are not bringing problems with them. It is nothing unusual. Nether Folk seem to believe that their place is out front in whatever is going on. I have to admit, with them heading the parade, things most always go well. I guess it is part of their mystery. When it comes to whipping up something unusual or magical, leave it to the Nether Folk. The Little Folk certainly are adept in coming up with the unusual or magical.
As I have said, they seem to believe that if there is something unusual about to happen it is their faction that should start it by being out front. Several of them are standing around looking at boxes on the turf and poking at them with their feet. One of the Little Folk backed away when a box moved suddenly when he got in near proximity to it. That started a conversation and all of the little folk moved quickly to get a bit further away from that area. Well now, is everybody getting nervous over what may be in the boxes that seem to move of their own volition? Is there perhaps animal life in the boxes? Now, one of the Nether Folk moves out in front, leans down and appears to be talking directly to one of the boxes. The box, to which he is speaking to, now opens up and out steps a fancy dressed, unusually tall Nether Folk man holding a musical instrument in his hand. He raises it to his mouth and his cheeks form up like red balloons. A sound emits from it that sounds like a wild screech such as never heard before. All nearby jump and run in fear. Two more blasts are sounded by the strange looking Nether Folk and all goes unearthly quiet. This man, who seems to now take charge of all the others, waves his arms in a circle and like magic, all of the others form up behind him and the Nether Folk march away softly singing.
What a beautiful and unusual way to start a celebration, though of what no one seems to know. I was so excited, I forgot to mention that each and every box contained a Nether Folk person dressed in gold. What a wonderful time we’re having! Do not go away. Something else is about to take place like nothing I have seen before. The very air seems to be getting heavier tho nothing else seems to be changing. As for me, I have the strangest feeling that something is about to happen and it does. Explosions rent the atmosphere around us and everyone is trying to find a place to feel protected. Who knows from what? Suddenly a loud crashing sound seems to envelop the entire area. It comes from the forward part of the ground where most of the Nether Folk had been congregated in a group They have disappeared from view. All there is to see is a large slanted depression that seems to lead deeper into the earth. Where are the Little People, or as we know them, the Nether Folk? There is just a very deep silence. Bare earth is all one can see.
Time seems to be standing still, no changes have taken place for what seems to be, hours. Suddenly there is the sound of chains clanking and what was a slanted cavern of earth is changing into a flat table like a panel rising slowly and smoothly and filling the ugly hole in the earth, but, where are the Nether Folk? Are they lost to us? Will we never see them or hear their sweet music again?
A different voice fills the air now recognizable as that of the Green Man. It has been some time since we saw him last. The Green Man urges all of us to not be upset by anything that may happen. Well, we do know that whenever he appears, strange things do take place.. We shall see. The Green Man is a very friendly person as long as he is not upset. Now he has walked over to talk to a few of the Nether Folk who have called to him.
There appears to be a lot of hand waving between the two men. Under my breath I find myself urging the both of them to remain calm. All has been fine up to this point. I hope nothing goes wrong to upset things. Don’t you? If anyone can do a thing to stir up a fuss it could be the Green Man arguing with The Nether Folk. Stay calm men. All is running smoothly to now. I will be back tomorrow. I am tired.
Here I am once more. I am anxious to see what is going on. There is much milling around amongst the Green Man and the Nether Folk. It is very confusing to me as to what the problem might be. Wait a minute, a real large Leprechaun is pointing toward the Nether Folk group while at the same time talking to the Green Man. It appears that he is telling the Green Man that one of the Nether Folk is to be in charge along with him (him, the Green Man) in whatever is to take place. I hope everything is going to run smoothly. I fear that all this hand waving points to much discord between the parties involved. It now appears that everything is settled to the satisfaction of everyone.
The Green Man, Nether Folk, Leprechaun and some Fairies also, are moving together toward the large panel covering that cavern like hole made in the ground. Now it seems, the Nether Folk are no longer with the others. What is happening? They have disappeared completely.
All of these happenings have my mind going in circles. I must take some time off.
Chapter 14
Above a meadow green, surrounded by a heavily wooded forest, my place, as I see it, God’s place as I know it, animals of every ilk run free, just as you and I, to roam the countryside. I suspect there may be another kind of folk near, like you and me, those, we don’t ever get to see. There is a feeling I cannot hide, that I am in for a surprise. There it is, a shaking of the earth all about me, then a quiet voice says, “Do not fear, I’m at your side”. For that while, no harm can come to you. He asks that I lead him to his cousins, known to me as the Nether Folk or the Little People. He says this with a laugh. Laugh he may, when he compares them with his size. These new cousins from away certainly are rotund.
It’s time to start the fun. There are so many different people now, it’s getting difficult to sort them out. The varying colors are just amazing. All but perhaps half a dozen of the Nether Folk have disappeared. That cuts them down to almost nil. Is there more happening somewhere that we cannot see? Some of the watchers are now pointing to the area where we last saw the panel that covered that tremendous bare hole in the ground. Wow! Now look at that! The panel is slowly moving to uncover the hole. As it does patches of vivid color can be see which evolve into shapes of people and, would you believe, it’s the Nether Folk with their cousins formed up into a musical band playing, ‘God Bless The U.S.A.’ The audience is dancing and singing as the panel continues on to uncover that hole in the ground. All of the Nether Folk are safe and happy to be together again. I think the celebration is over for the time. Now, hold on, wait a minute. The Green Man waves his arms in a circle and there is a noise like the fluttering of wings. The area now is amass with Fairies flying all about and playing their tiny musical instruments so wonderful to hear. O’ No! There seems to be a mix-up in the direction this celebration is taking. The Fairies have stopped their flying all about and are now, I think, headed for home. There is a sound of impending disaster from the area of the work being done on the panel. The panel, it appears, has a mind of its own. It is now moving back and forth in abbreviated jerks forcing the people on board to look for something stable to hang onto. For the most part they cling to one another. Good luck, people. The panel is in place now, and steady, or so it seems. I watch it carefully. A narrow space of light spasmodically shows at one end and then, the other. Look at the panel steadily and you will see that the space is growing wider. Look carefully and you can see that some of the Nether people are sliding closer to an end and will slide off into the hole below. Please do something, someone, to stop what is happening. It looks as though the movement of the panel cannot be stopped. Here comes the Green Man and a large Leprechaun. Each does a dance step, so it seems and there is a very large popping sound and the panel becomes one solid length and I give a loud sigh of relief. Everyone is safe once again.
I cannot stand all this suspense. I am going home to rest folks.
Bye, Bye

This story gets better and better. Now I can’t wait to hear more about those little green men and the fairies. I’m betting, Charlie, that these little characters you have invented in your mind have become very real to you. I can say that because the characters I created in my two novels are real to me. I sometimes have to remember who the creator of them was…me. They come alive, even seem to speak to me…and what they don’t tell me about themselves remains unwritten. I know, send the men in white coats, but I have heard this said by other writers as well. Okay, now I have written a book. I look forward to chapter 3.
I loved reading chapter 4. You had some wonderful new images in it, like the shoes that looked like ancient Egyptian ships. And now that there is a bit of banter between the Netherfolk, things are getting interesting. But are you hinting at something more ominous when you mention how the leprechaun can lose his power>
I hear the songs of little people…
The sound does carry up the hill a bit.It does not bother us as we know you are having a party.
