Living Free

I wonder what brought me back to my first years of school.
Those were days; I was learning right from wrong, reading,
‘Riting, ’rithmatic and how adept I’d be to break the rules.
O’ I knew every nook and corner, ‘specially the principal’s

Office. That’s where punishment was dealt by a heavy hand.
I’d be surprised if my muddy tracks were not still there, from
The day I was brought in for stealing peppers from the man
Who grew them on his farm. Does his mouth burn like mine?

As for me, I’d say, two punishments do not fit the crime.
School rules have changed, the country’s laws are different.
Parents find it difficult, there’s so much that remains the same.
Kids are Kids, the world around, fun is where they find it.

Well, I had mine at its cost, some I am not proud of, but,
Here I be, growing old, but free, with a wonderful family.
They, with the greatest of friends, have made my life a boon.
What I miss the most is, my mate and one of ours taken too soon.

Dear God, I am thankful for all that I’ve had, You gave – took away.
You will put us together one day. AMEN.
